Time4Young Adults
Young adults with cancer face a difficult time, just like anyone affected by cancer. However, navigating a cancer diagnosis when you’re becoming an adult and coming out of your teenage years brings its own challenges. That’s why we have developed the Time4Young Adults sessions.
Young adults with cancer or who have been affected by cancer through friends or family members can attend our Time4Young Adults sessions knowing that a qualified counsellor will be in attendance and also they can meet with their peers and people of their own age going through similar situations. It’s a weekly session that takes place on Mondays from 4.30pm to 6pm here at the drop-in cancer centre in Birmingham.
We took the decision to create a new group specifically for 16-22 year olds after we saw the need for a group that caters for young adults with cancer or have been affected by cancer. Being able to speak with people of their own age is an important part of the Time4Young Adults sessions and it has really helped some of our older group members in particular. Just like Time4Teens, the group is still about having fun and being amongst others that are going through similar experiences but it’s aimed at the older age group. It’s still a place where young people can switch off from their respective situations or talk to others going through the same experiences. The group is open to young adults with cancer, those who are carers, family members of those with cancer, siblings and school/college friends – anyone from 16 to 22 who has been affected by cancer.
Weekly activities include things like quizzes, bake-offs, arts & crafts are combined with life skills sessions that can benefit our young people navigating through life, cancer and more. Once a month, we offer a therapeutic session which is still based around activities and games but is aimed at helping in a comfortable environment.
