[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]We recently heard that some work led by PhD student Timothy Mulvany who is sponsored by HHHO has, together with his research team, they come second in an international competition for the segmentation of Paediatric Brain Tumours.
Their team of researchers from the Artificial Intelligence in Pediatric Neuroimaging group (AIPNI) lab at Aston University headed by Dr Jan Novak entered this year’s Brain Tumor Segmentation (BraTS) Pediatric Challenge and achieved 2nd based on the testing performance. The entry was led by PhD student Tim Mulvany, Dr Daniel Griffiths-King and Dr Heather Rose who developed the algorithmic approach.
Rather than developing a ‘black box’ algorithm which uses all available MRI as inputs, and the tumor masks as an output, their entry decomposed the segmentation problem into sequential simplified tasks. We leveraged existing state-of-the-art deep-learning model architectures for these simplified tasks – nnU-Net.
The benefit of such an approach is it more closely echoes the current radiological workflow of clinical radiologists in the NHS who may perform this work, and therefore may promote clinical acceptance of such an AI tool into clinical practice. Our approach showed improved delineation of cystic components and oedema over a baseline nnU-Net model. At the 27th International conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention (MICCAI) conference in Morocco, PhD student Timothy Mulvany presented this approach.

This has been a great experience helping me to advance my work on paediatric brain tumour analysis and equipping me with valuable technical skills for my future work.
I also attended the CRUK Children’s Brain Tumour Centre of Excellence summer school, where I learned about the latest developments in pediatric cancer research, expanding my understanding of the various treatments being developed and the cutting-edge technologies being employed!
Additionally, I presented a poster at the Medical Image Understanding and Analysis conference, which gave me the opportunity to share our work and gain valuable feedback from other researchers in the field. I’m also excited to share that I’m preparing to submit my first research paper, a significant milestone in my PhD journey.
