Macmillan Support HHHO for Understanding & Reducing Health Inequalities Project……

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Cancer does not discriminate! with 1100 people per day in the UK being diagnosed with cancer (that’s one person every 90 seconds), our data at HHHO shows despite being located in one of the most deprived areas with a diverse community, HHHO are not reaching the diverse communities that potentially need support. We have always wanted to understand why, especially as we have a very diverse team of service providers. Is this because they already have support in place? is this due to cultural reasons? We need to be educated by these communities and let them have a voice which we can listen to.

Being passionate about diversity, and wanting to reach out more, Harry’s mom worked on an idea of a project to do some outreach work to listen and understand people within the East Birmingham locality. She then presented the idea of the project, and followed this up submitting an application for funding.

We are delighted to announce that they love our project and we have just received the wonderful news that they will fund our work, which will be ongoing for twelve months.

Our project has now passed over to the Operations team where Ian Carr  (Operations Director) and Sarah Guy (Head of Counselling & Listening) will formulate a Health Inequalities committee, where they will work with a team of culturally sound counsellors. This diverse team will scope the framework of how we reach out to diverse communities within East Birmingham area.

The main Health Inequality Committee (HIC), will then split into sub committees where two culturally sound counsellors will adapt the framework and materials to address their specific community. This pilot project will have a direct focus particulary on the South Asian Community within East Birmingham. Our ultimate aim at the end of the project term is collate all our findings and create appropriate support sessions within this community.

Rebecca Wherrell, Macmillan said “Macmillan is incredibly proud to collaborate with Help Harry Help Others. Ensuring that cancer services are accessible to everyone is crucial, yet we recognize that some individuals and communities face significant challenges in accessing these services. Help Harry Help Others is dedicated to understanding and overcoming these barriers, and Macmillan is delighted to partner with them to make this vision a reality. Over the past [x] years, Help Harry Help Others has provided outstanding support to those in need. This project exemplifies their ongoing commitment to serving people and making a difference.”

Harry’s Mom, Georgie Moseley said “HHHO love collaborating with other charities and we cannot thank Macmillan enough for the support. We are really looking forward to reaching out to the South Asian community to  listen and understand people’s needs both culturally, practically and emotionally. I started to reach out some years ago to diverse communities however, I soon realised that me going in directly created a barrier. I am white British, and to engage with these communities we need to have people from their own communities, speaking their language to listen and learn. This has always been on my mind and I am very much looking forward to seeing the outcome of our findings thanks to Macmillan”.  [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery interval=”3″ img_size=”1200×1200″][/vc_column][/vc_row]
